Verschillende generaties van de familie Bernarda, die hier woonde, worden in de Abtenlevens van Mariengaarde beschreven. Eerst werd een deel van dit landgoed aan het klooster Klaarkamp geschonken en tot vrouwenconvent ingericht; daarnaast bleef het adelshuis nog een tijd lang bestaan. Uiteindelijk verwierf Klaarkamp geheel Bernardaburen. Nadat de vrouwen naar elders verhuisd waren, was Bernarda- of Bannerhuis een kloosteruithof. In de 15de eeuw functioneerde de uithof ook als vergaderplaats van de landgemeente van de Noordelijke Niogen (Ferwerdera-, Dongera- en Dantumadeel). In 1511 was de stamvader van de huidige familie Van Beyma (thoe Kingma) kloostermeier op Bannerhuis.\"",
