De state is interessant omdat hij het stamhuis was van een adellijke familie die aan het begin van de 16de eeuw met Remmersma's van Dokkum, Mellema's van Oostrum en Bootsma's van Kollum verzwagerd was. \r\nEind 15de eeuw woonde Ritscke Gauckema er, wiens dochter Eets trouwde met Poppe Remmersma alias Mellema. In 1543 had inderdaad Poppe Mellema land by Oltwaltmer syel, terwijl in 1624 zijn achterkleindochter Aelcke Galama eigenaresse was. Aelckes dochter Sjouck van Hiddema trouwde met Epe Douma, die in 1640 als eigenaar wordt genoemd.
