Dae fenna by Paepingha stins ... deer dy weer yn leyt wordt in 1484,1404 en als Papingafenne en Papingestense wyer of Papingawyer in 1511 en 1543 genoemd. Hier, zowel als elders, betekende de aanduiding Papinga vaak eigendom van de \"paap\".\r\nDe Papingastins werd bewoond door een van de hoofdpastoors van de Oldehoofster kerk, in casu de Mariengaarder pastoor. Geregeld wordt in de 15de eeuw een Oldehoofster priester dan ook als thoe Papinghastins aangeduid. In de opstrek van de Oldehove lag op het Nieuwland de Papingafenne, eigendom van verschillende pastoorsbeneficia van de kerk. In de fenne lag de stins bij een stinswier. In 1484 werd een compromis gesloten tussen de pastoor en andere betrokkenen over de gevolgen van het graven van de stadsgracht door de fenne; de stins was daardoor van de kerk afgesneden. \r\nDe Papingafenne sloot in het oosten aan op het Oldehoofsterkerkhof en het grote blok geestelijk goed van Sint-Vitus in de (huidige) binnenstad. De combinatie stins, stinswier en fenne maakt duidelijk dat het om een echte stins ging.\"\r\n\"Over het uiterlijk van Papingastins is niets bekend. De stins was in 1551 reeds afgebroken. De wier werd in of kort voor 1581 afgegraven.\"",
