De kwelder-wallen zijn ontstaan doordat het door geul aangevoerde zand en slib sedimenteerde langs de randen van hogere platen. De wallen breidden zich in zeewaartse richting uit en werden van zuid naar noord dus jonger maar ook lager. De wallen vormden de hogere delen van het landschap en werden al vroeg gebruikt als woonplaats. De strandwallen worden gemarkeerd door terpen en oude wegen. Door het langdurig gebruik van de strandwallen voor akkerbouw zijn de percelen vaak kruinig (opbollen als gevolg van eeuwenlange beoefening van de landbouw). Deze opeenvolging van kwelderwallen is een zeldzaam verschijnsel in Nederland. Binnen het gebied zijn drie kwelderwallen te onderscheiden.
